Our Mission
Captions Unlimited, under the leadership of Denise Hinxman, is passionate about providing real-time captioning interpreter services. Real-time captioning is sometimes referred to as Communication Access Real-time Translation [CART].
Over 30 million Americans have significant hearing loss. While the use of sign language is common, many people who are deaf or hard of hearing rely on English to communicate. The development of broadcast captioning opened the world of television news and entertainment to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. But that new technology was left behind in their living rooms when they ventured out into their communities.
Now, there is real-time Internet captioning to take communication access wherever it is needed. CART providers offer real-time captioning at events like religious services, conventions, business meetings, public hearings, or in classrooms.
Trained as stenographic reporters, CART providers are able to type the words of a sermon, seminar, testimony or lecture on steno machines. The stenographic notes are translated instantly into word-for-word text on a computer screen and then simultaneously streamed seamlessly over the Internet to the consumer’s computer screen.
CART not only allows people with hearing loss to understand what is being said, but also to understand the interaction within an environment, such as a question from a student to a professor or jokes or environmental sounds such as cell phones ringing and laughter at the back of the room. This allows the individual who is deaf or hard of hearing to be an active participant rather than just a silent observer.
About Denise Hinxman
Owner and CEO
Denise Hinxman is owner and CEO of Captions Unlimited of Nevada, Inc. She has been providing captioning and CART services since 1992. Her first foray into the captioning arena consisted of captioning the speeches of former First Lady Barbara Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. She has captioned the comedic routine of Rich Little and many Oprah Winfrey interviews.
Years later, she captioned President George W. Bush in Reno, Nevada, along with General David Petraeus and other U.S. and foreign dignitaries. In 2012, she captioned one of the inaugural balls where both President Obama and Vice President Biden spoke.
Prior to captioning, Denise was a freelance/official court reporter for nearly 30 years, practicing mainly in Reno, Nevada. She has attained the highest designation one can receive from the National Court Reporters Association, and she also holds her Certified Real-time Reporter designation (the first CRR in the state of Nevada) and is a Certified CART Provider and Certified Broadcast Captioner.
Denise is a former President of the Nevada Court Reporters Association and former member of the State of Nevada Court Reporters Board.

Shawn is a CMRS, Certified Manager of Reporting Services. She is currently the Office Administrator for Captions Unlimited.
